On this week's episode of Out and About, Dr. Mae Gilliland of ArtsPartners talks with Dan Dietrich, trombonist with the Prairie Wind Ensemble, about their upcoming concert March 19 at Five Points Washington.

Founded in 1977, the Prairie Wind Ensemble brings together professional and hobbyist musicians from across Central Illinois to perform everything from classic marches to modern medleys.

Dietrich has been involved with the ensemble since 1980. His wife plays horn in the band.

“Some people bowl. Some people play pinochle. I play the bass trombone,” he said.

The March 19 performance features an array of music tied in some way to American history. The band will be joined for one of the songs, a march, by guest conductor Tony Marinello, the director of bands and associate professor of conducting at Illinois State University.

The Prairie Wind Ensemble performs at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 19, at Five Points Washington. Admission is free. Donations are suggested.

Mae Gilliland Wright is the host of WCBU's Out & About.
